2019 Food and Wine Festival Food Review

We attended EPCOT’s International Food and Wine Festival on two separate weekends in October and November. Both times we made our way around World Showcase trying to taste all of the food options that we were interested in. Overall, there was a good selection of gluten free items available, and I was definitely full from tasting my way around the festival. Emile’s Fromage Montage Cheese Trail was a fun activity to complete during the festival: buying participating dishes that were cheesy (marked in the festival guidebook) got you a stamp on a page in your book. Once five spots were stamped, you could redeem them for a special cheesecake. It didn’t matter whether all the stamps were from the same booth or from different booths, as long as there were five stamps.

**Items in the booths are not free from cross-contamination, as they are prepared in close contact with other food. Some food items listed here may not be gluten free, I will note which ones are not**

Islands of the Caribbean

Jerk-spiced Chicken with Roasted Sweet Plantain Salad and Mango Chutney Yogurt Gluten Friendly $5.50

The chicken was good, but it was way too spicy for my taste, I couldn’t finish it. Hubby liked it very much however. The mango chutney yogurt was good, but it didn’t help cut the spiciness any.

NOT GLUTEN FREE

Quesito: Puff Pastry with Sweetened Cream Cheese and Guava Sauce Vegetarian $4.00

While I didn’t eat any of this as it’s not gluten friendly, Hubby enjoyed his, even though it was so hot it was hard to enjoy sweet food. (Also I forgot to take a picture until after he had eaten half of it!)

The Alps

NOT GLUTEN FREE

Warm Raclette Swiss Cheese with Baby Potatoes, Cornichons, and Baguette Vegetarian $5.00

This was not gluten friendly, but I still ate the cheese with the potatoes. The cheese was so good, but it needed to be eaten quickly, or else it sort of congealed and was harder to eat.

India

Madras Red Curty with Roasted Cauliflower, Baby Carrots, Chickpeas, and Uncle Ben’s Basmati Rice Gluten Friendly, Vegetarian $5.00

This was one of my favorites from the festival. It was not too spicy (trust me, my threshold for spice is very low), and full of flavor. It came with the rice on the side, but it tasted better to mix it all together!

Germany

NOT GLUTEN FREE

Roast Bratwurst in a Prop and Peller Pretzel Roll $5.75

I only tried some of the bratwurst, but it was good. Hubby ate the rest and said it was very good.

*alcohol*

Riesling Flight $6.50

I mixed up the way the flight went, so I couldn’t tell which Riesling was which, but they give you a card that highlights each one (if you can keep the flight in the same order). However, I still enjoyed them very much. It was refreshing on such a hot day.

Spain

NOT GLUTEN FREE

Charcuterie in a Cone with imported Spanish Meats, Cheese and Olives with an Herb Vinaigrette $6.50

While this wasn’t listed as gluten friendly, as someone with an intolerance, it did not bother me, since the wheat was in the cured meats. This was very salty though, I almost couldn’t eat the olives because they were so salty.

Brazil

Pão de Queijo: Brazilian Cheese Bread Gluten Friendly, Vegetarian $4.50

Y’all. This cheese bread. This was my absolute favorite food at the whole festival. This cheese bread is so cheesy, plus I love bread (gluten free of course), so I thought it was super tasty. This item alone is how I finished the Cheese Trail. Hubby however thought they were a little greasy for his taste.

Sunshine Seasons (Dessert Counter)

NOT GLUTEN FREE

Vanilla Gelato Sundae with GHIRARDELLI Hot Fudge or Caramel Drizzle, Whipped Cream, and Sprinkles Vegetarian $5.99

While this gelato sundae was not listed as gluten friendly, it did not affect me. I thoroughly enjoyed this sundae. There was so much chocolate and whipped cream. I know this is something you can get anywhere, but Mickey sprinkles make everything taste better, right? Notice how the cast member drenched the gelato in chocolate syrup so much that you can’t even see the gelato in the picture, that’s my kind of sundae.

Earth Eats

NOT GLUTEN FREE

The IMPOSSIBLE Burger Slider with Wasabi Cream and spicy Asian Slaw on a Sesame Seed Bun Vegetarian $5.25

Hubby ordered this and he raved about how great it tasted. He still talks about how great the plant based burger was.

Active Eats

Spice-crused Verlasso Salmon with UNCLE BEN’s Quinoa & Ancient Grains Medley, Crushed Avocado, and Sherry Vinegar Gluten Friendly $5.75

This salmon was probably the best salmon I’ve ever had (sorry dad). I wasn’t a huge fan of all the greens underneath, but the salmon itself with the avocado was delicious.

Australia Marketplace

Roasted Lamb Chop with Sweet Potato Puree, Bush Berry Pea Salad, and Pistachio-Pomegranite Gremolata Gluten Friendly $7.75

This was my first time trying lamb, so I didn’t really know what to expect. It was good, but a little tough to eat. There was not much to the pea salad or sweet potato puree, so it was mainly the Lamb Chop. It was good, but not my favorite.

The Chocolate Experience: From Bean to the Bar

Ghirardelli® Drinking Chocolate (Non-alcoholic) $3.28

I don’t really know what I was expecting with this drinking chocolate, but it was not what I expected. It was more bitter than I thought it would be, it was definitely not sweet chocolate. After a few sips I decided it was too rich for me to finish. The Ghirardelli squares they gave us upon entering the experience were good though.

Overall, there were plenty of gluten friendly options (and some I didn’t get to try) around the festival. There were also options that I could make to be gluten friendly by removing the bread or eating around things. I definitely recommend trying to plan your visit around Food and Wine festival.

If you plan on eating around the festival, I highly recommend not making lunch or dinner reservations anywhere and just snacking on the festival options all afternoon. If you’re going with friends, split dishes so everyone can get a try and you’ll save money too!

What dishes do you hope will return for 2020? Let me know in the comments!

See you on Main Street!
