Morimoto Asia Gluten Free Dinner Review

*This review was written July 2020, during COVID-19, so certain experiences may change in the future*

*Morimoto Asia is not owned by Disney, so allergy polices may vary*

Last weekend we visited Morimoto Asia for an early dinner with some friends. Upon arriving, I noticed the menu board that was outside did not have as many options as I had previously seen from menus online, so I’m guessing they’ve limited their menu during COVID-19. This outside menu had little symbols to note which items could be made gluten free.

We were seated in a booth under the chandeliers. Y’all, these chandeliers are breathtaking, I kept looking up during dinner just to look at them.

When we checked in, no one asked about an allergy in the party, which is the first time that’s happened for me while on Disney property. When our waiter came to the table, he did ask about allergies, I told him gluten, and he said okay and then didn’t have any follow up. There was no explanation of the menu, or that some items could be made gluten free or anything.

Like most restaurants, Morimoto Asia was doing online menus, with little tabletop cards featuring QR codes linking to the menu. The menu had asterisks next to the dishes that could be made gluten free, but there was no indication on the website that the asterisks meant they could be made gluten free. The only reason I knew was because I took a picture of the menu board outside and cross-referenced the online menu with the picture.

The sushi menu also had asterisks on certain items, but this was to denote rolls that contained raw fish, so there was no consistency on what the asterisks meant.

I ordered the Morimoto Gomoku Fried Rice without shrimp, making sure to reiterate to the waiter that I needed it to be gluten free. My non-gluten free friend ordered the regular version of the dish. Our dishes were different colors when we got them, due to the fact that mine had no sauce on it. It was pretty bland, but the waiter brought out some gluten free soy sauce about halfway through the meal, which actually gave it more flavor and improved the taste. I do not think that the fried rice was worth $31, especially since I ordered it without the shrimp. I can get the same fried rice somewhere else for cheaper.

My friend got the Morimoto “Buri-Bop” which can also be made gluten free. It was cooked table-side in a 400 degree Fahrenheit bowl, which was really cool to watch.

Overall, I’m hoping that my experience was because the menu was so limited. I hope to go back when they go back to a full menu and update this review.
